to president obama, and now it turns out, it was the f.b.i. that discovered the relationship was with his biographer. homeland security correspondent bob orr is standing by in washington tonight. good evening, bob. >> reporter: good evening, jim. well, david petraeus is one of america's most decorated and reveered generals. as head of the c.i.a., he was in charge of the nation's most sensitive operations, but the ridgedly disciplined p/e was hiding his own dark secret. sources say c.i.a. director david petraeus was never the target of an f.b.i. investigation but when his name surfaced in another probe, agents became concerned that petraeus, or his e-mail accounts, may have been compromised. it all began a few months ago when a female acquaintance of the c.i.a. director received a series of harassing e-mails which apparently referenced petraeus. the woman, who sources say is not a government official, notified the f.b.i. federal agents quickly traced those e-mails back to petraeus' biographer, paula broadwell. a further investigation then revealed evidence of an extra marital affair, inclu

have learned that for the last few months the f.b.i. has been investigating the communications of petraeus. law enforcement sources tell bob orr there was concern about e-mails that the c.i.a. director was exchanging with a woman who is a journalist. additional sources tell us those communications involved paula broadwell, seen here with petraeus on a department plane. broadwell, 39 years old, published a book last year on petraeus' time as the general in charge in afghanistan. broadwell is a harvard university research associate and she spent time in afghanistan with petraeus. she is a west point graduate, as is petraeus. we have tried to reach broadwell today but we have not heard back. before this sudden development, it would have been hard to find edyone in washington admired as much as david petraeus. wae former general led the war in iraq and the war in sfghanistan. he is a scholar known for his calm, steady advice to presidents. we begin our coverage of this breaking story with nancy cordes at the white house tonight. nancy? hi reporter: scott, white house officials say

: sources say the down fall of c.i.a. director david petraeus was rooted in jealousy. the f.b.i., uncovered evidence of an affair between petraeus and his biographer paula broadwell after she sent harassing messages to another woman who broadwell thought was too close to petraeus. source have identified the second woman as 37-year-old jill kelley of the tampa area. cbs news has been told kelley is a civilian who does work for the u.s. central command. petraeus headed the central command from late 2008 to mid 2010. and during that time presented kelley and her husband an award for raising money to pay for junior enlisted men and women to attend military balls. petraeus has told friends that he had no romantic involvement with kelley. and only saw her when she was with her husband. law enforcement officials say they found no evidence to refute that. and described kelley as a victim who received and reported threatening messages. some close to petraeus say he's told them the affair with broadwell began about two months after he took over the central intelligence agency in september 2011. and t

information on that story. bob, good morning. >> good morning, norah and charlie. fbi officials have told us their investigation into this whole scandal which brought down david petraeus so far has not turned up any threat or damage to national security. but since the affair with paula broadwell occurred while petraeus was the director of the central intelligence agency, the cia's inspector general now has begun his own investigation. sources say the cia is looking into the general conduct of petraeus over the 14 months he headed the agency. officials say the probe is exploratory and doesn't presuppose any particular outcome. the inspector general wants to make sure petraeus didn't misuse any agency assets in the process of carrying on his affair with broadwell. for the first time thursday, attorney general eric holder defended the justice department's handling of the fbi summer-long investigation of the broadwell/petraeus matter. holder was asked specifically about the fbi's decision to delay notifying the white house until after the election. >> we felt very secure in the knowledge that a
correspondent john miller, former fbi national intelligence official, joins us with the latest on the fbi and the president of justice investigations. good morning. >> good morning, charlie. we spoke a friend of the broadwell family who told us they were overwhelmed by the outpouring of support from neighbors. 25 of them came over with all kinds of food and kind of set up camp there. on the home front it looks like things are coming back together. on the legal front there's a little more concern. let's go through the mechanics here. when this starts out, the agents get the stalking complaint and instead of waiting to get through the case and then bring it to a prosecutor, right at the beginning, because they see who this might involve, they go to an assistant u.s. attorney and say, if we go through with this, is there a prosecution your office would go forward with? and that tampa office says yes. then the special agent in charge of the tampa office reviews the case. he says this involves some big names. some interesting possibilities. let's kick this up a level. he brings it to robert o'

david petraeus. >> general allen is entitled to due process in this matter. >> reporter: the fbi gave the pentagon more than 20,000 pages of e-mail communications between general allen and tampa socialite jill kelley. kelley went to the fbi with anonymous threatening e-mails. agents traced those to paula broadwell, and uncovered her affair with petraeus. one defense official describes the e-mails between general allen and kelley as flirtatious. another official tells cbs news some of the e-mails were more than friendly ex changes and may have crossed the line. general allen said he did nothing wrong, but for now the capitol hill hearings on his promotion are delayed. >> at the request of the secretary of defense the president has put on hold general allen's nomination. >> reporter: in addition to social using with kelley, both general allen and petraeus wrote letters of support foreher sister in a custody battle. even though petraeus has resigned, lawmakers returning to washington want to hear what he has to say about the deadly attack on the u.s. consulate in benghazi, libya. >> i th
at oakland international airport. the fbi is now investigating a passenger who was carrying potentially dangerous materials. cbs 5 reporter mark sayre on the man's wristwatch which immediately raised suspicions. >> reporter: the fbi now taking the lead in this investigation. and alameda county sheriff's deputies which actually made the arrest say there is no question what was found here was dangerous. the incident occurred here at the terminal 2 security checkpoint at the oakland international airport. authorities say 49-year-old jeffrey mcgann a 49-year-old resident of rancho palos verdes was trying to botched a flight home to l.a.x. when he attempted to pass through the security checkpoint with a very suspicious watch. >> the watch had on it a toggle switch, a series of fuses, a series of wires protruding from it, a circuit board, and the watch itself which was on incorrect time. >> reporter: it wasn't just the watch that drew authorities' attention, it was his overall behavior and an unusual alteration to his boots. >> be they also had what appeared to be a homemade cavity in there a

by cell phones. but it took about 10 more days .ir the f.b.i. to get its hands on video taken by security cameras at the consulate. that classified video shown to the house and senate intelligence committees answers some of the many questions surrounding the attack. a u.s. intelligence official said it shows no sign the assault arose, as first thought, emt of a demonstration. but it also indicates the attack, though intentional, was not well planned. the video makes clear the attackers did not know the of ut of the compound. the attack lasted about an hour, and ended with the consulate in flames. a scene captured by a ce deillance drone overhead. ivinsurviving americans retreated to a c.i.a. safe house about a mile away where they continued to take fire from small arms and rocket-propelled grenades. after another hour, the shooting stopped. for four hours, no shots were fired, giving the rescue team flown in from tripoli time to make its way to the annex. 10 minutes after the rescuers arrived, a second attack began. this time with mortars. that attack was also captured on video, both by s
